For more than 20 seconds an earthquake which measured five on the Richter Scale shook the island to its inner core and left Barbadians badly shaken as well.
The earthquake which originally measured 7.4 on the Richter scale vibrated its way through the Eastern Caribbean sometime after 2 p.m.
By the time it reached Barbados, it was measuring five, but it was enough to scare the living daylights out of all those who felt it.
A resident checks the damages on his apartment building in the St. George parish, central Barbados, after a powerful earthquake rocked the eastern Caribbean on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.4, was centered 26 miles, 42 kilometers, southeast of Roseau, the capital of Dominica, where the shaking lasted for about 20 seconds. The quake was felt hundreds of miles away in Puerto Rico to the west, and Venezuela and Suriname to the south.
Update: 6:48am - Miami Time
I've been informed (by reliable sources - Mum & Dad) that Barbados has just sustained an earthquake!!!
Apparently, people were fleeing Grantley Adams airport in terror (Dad was flying in and missed it by 1/2 hour) & Mum said the chandeliers were shaking! I lived in Los Angeles for several years, so they're nothing new to me, but it does not bode well for Martinique and Guadeloupe... who apparently got it worse.
Factoid #1: The last time an earthquake rocked Barbados was back in 1953.
Factoid #2: Today, Nov 30th, is independence day in Barbados (independence from England).

when i was living in japan we had earthquakes and tremors all the time...they would tell us to stay in under the door frames but i always grabbed my son and ran outside, the housing was made from concrete by american service men...i wasn't trusting that! (sorry if i offended anyone but i learn my lessons the first time)
What happened the first time? Was it poor housing (or poor service men???)
Fess up Daisy!!
it was shoddy materials and service men who didn't give a shit about the housing they were building because they were residing in the barracks...created a real mess and every time i felt the earth move...my feet would move me outside...ps the earth never did swallow me up :)
Ah... LoL! For some reason, I thought that story was going to go another direction.
To be sure, I am glad the earth didn't swallow you up!
Breaking News beats Breaking Wind!!

Daisy, who couldn't LOVE the adorable sea cows.. they are made in cuteness heaven!
lady jane...just a little story about how i got connected with them...i was 12 and in florida swimming at an inlet...i had very long hair at the time and felt what i thought was seaweed in my hair...i turned to find a sea cow eating my hair...being that close scared the hell out of me and i swam so fast to the beach i actually scraped my fingers on the sand coming in...from then on they were mine :)
Ahh:-) Thats a lovely story!! You've been touched by magic!
(Does that seem overly dramatic??)
Anyway, I think anyone who has ever seen one - or had their hair eaten by one - would fall in love. They are wonderful creatures.
